Situated near the heart of Bangor, Bangor Golf Club offers a scenic and challenging parkland course overlooking Belfast Lough and the Antrim Hills. Founded in 1903, the club began with a nine-hole course before being expanded to 18 holes by renowned designer James Braid. While it has undergone modernisation, it still retains the traditional charm and features of its historic origins.
With over 1,000 playing and social members, Bangor Golf Club prides itself on a vibrant and welcoming community. Visitors and societies are warmly received throughout the year, with tailored packages available to suit the needs of any group, large or small. Be sure to join the mailing list to stay informed on special rates and offers.
The course presents a modern challenge in beautifully maturing surroundings, where early plantings have grown into majestic trees lining lush fairways and smooth, fast greens. From the top of the 4th hill, players can enjoy breathtaking views of the Irish Sea, Belfast Lough, the Antrim Hills, and even the coast of Scotland.
The course has attracted major events over the years, including the Ulster and Irish Professional Championships and several high-profile Pro-Ams. Legendary golfers such as Christy O’Connor Senior, Fred Daly, Peter Allis, Tony Jacklin, and Roberto de Vincenzo have graced the fairways. In August 1962, Christy O’Connor Senior set the course professional record with an incredible 62, featuring nine birdies, eight pars, and an eagle at the 460-yard 5th hole.
Bangor Golf Club has a strong connection to Rory McIlroy, as his coach, Michael Bannon, served as club professional until recently. It’s not uncommon to spot Rory and Michael practicing on the fairways during the year.
With its heritage design, modern challenge, and spectacular surroundings, Bangor Golf Club is a must-visit for any golfer looking to enjoy a premier parkland experience. Whether you’re playing in a tournament or enjoying a friendly round, Bangor delivers an unforgettable day on the course.
