The Portmarnock Experience

Founded in 1894 by W.C. Pickeman and George Ross, Portmarnock began with nine holes, officially opened on 26 December of that year. Mungo Park, the 1874 Open Champion, served as the club’s first professional and oversaw its initial design.

Today, Portmarnock is considered one of Ireland’s premier links courses, ranked 26th in the UK & Ireland Top 100 (2025/26). The Championship Course combines three nine-hole loops (Red, Blue, Yellow) into a par-72 layout spanning over 7,200 yards. Known for its firm, fair playing conditions, the course rewards accuracy and strategic shot-making.

A standout moment awaits at the 15th hole, a stunning seaside par 3 hailed by Arnold Palmer as “the finest par 3 in the world”. Other highlights include the demanding par-5 6th, featuring water and deep bunkers, and the strategic 10th, where thoughtful lines are essential to navigate the approach to a subtle green.

Portmarnock’s excellence is reflected in its tournament pedigree, having hosted a record 19 Irish Opens (1927–2003), as well as the Walker Cup, Canada Cup, Alcan Open, Irish Amateur Opens, and British Amateur stroke play qualifiers.
